Don Don Izakaya

16 Apr

Don Don Izakaya offers authentic Japanese bar food. The atmosphere is very similar to Guu however the food is quite different.

A lot of the items on the Don Don menu seem to be classic American dishes with a Japanese spin to it. For instance the menu offers hot dogs, caesar salads, and deviled eggs all Japanese infused.

We started off with a Don Don Special Black Croquette which consists of bread crumbs, cod roe, shrimp, and mayonnaise. I did not taste any shrimp. To me it tasted like a tater tot stuffed with KD cheese sauce. I cannot complain. It was my favourite order of the night.

Next we tried the slow cooked Miso Marinated Mackerel. You can’t tell from this photograph but it was really tiny. Pretty alright.

Later we tried the Seafood Udon with bonito flakes, squid, octopus, mussels, shrimp and garlic. I loved the look of this dish. The bonito flakes moved around which made the dish appear whimsical and almost like it was alive.

Fwhat-Fwhat Pork Sliders. They denied me a vegetarian version. I did get to try the sweet steamed bun though. Fhwat Fhwat.

Shiso Salt Edamame. Nice take on the mundane.

My second favourite dish of the night. This was a smoked yet almost raw salmon. The coarse salt on the side suited it perfectly and reminded me of a coke addiction. I skipped out on the garlic for my date.

Lastly dessert! We ordered the matcha green tea mousse with red bean topping. More red bean needed.

We also ordered the black seseame ice cream. I was very excited by this because sesame ice cream is often tough to find in Toronto Japanese restaurants. It was marvelous.
